Homemade Baking Spray aka Pan Release

As many of you know I bake & decorate cakes in my spare time. (You can see my creations at facebook.com/TheSweetBoutiquePage if you're interested.)  Over the years I've learned lots of tips & tricks for baking successfully and thought I would share this easy recipe for Homemade Baking Spray aka Pan Release with you.  It starts with 3 ingredients - flour, shortening, and oil.  All you need to do is mix equal parts of all the ingredients with a wisk until they are incorporated well.

For this batch I did 1/2 cup oil, 1/2 flour and a 1/2 cup of shortening.  I store my homemade baking release in an airtight container in a cool dry place - no need to refrigerate.

When I'm ready to use all I do is spread it on the bottom of my pan and along the sides with a pastry brush. You don't need a lot but you do want to make sure all the surfaces are covered including corners.  As you can see above I have a nice even coating.

You can see the results below --- perfect as a cake can be!  I love that it's easy to make, easy to store and I always have the ingredients on hand. Plus I don't have to worry about using parchment paper or buying cans of spray that get all gunked up anyway.

*Ignore that one picture is a sheet pan & the final picture is round cakes. I forgot to take a picture of the first cake so I did it the next time I baked.  Also this is not my original recipe as it's been passed along in baking circles for years, but I wanted to share it with you.
